Fertility / IVF

Many fractors can reduce fertility in both men and women, so it is important to evaluate each case individually.  Some women have a history of infection, polycystic ovaries, endometriosis, hormonal imbalances, thyroid disorders, obstruction of fallopian tubes, or previous ectopic pregnancy, but there are other areas to consider as well as reproductive health.  Other lifestyle factors may also need to be looked at, including general health and fitness, nutrition, emotional and psychological health as well as the way you manage stress.

So frequently I see women taking sole responsibilty for the couples fertility but 50% of fertility problems have a contributing male problem. In many cases sub optimal semen parameters can be improved by making lifestyle changes.

For a large number of couples there appears to be no medical reason why conception has not taken place.

In Chinese Medicine this may be down to weakness or imbalance in the energy (Qi). Notably strengthening the energy of the kidneys the organ associated with reproduction is well known by acupuncturists as being beneficial.  All points your acupuncturist uses should be selected according to your own constitution and case history

Acupuncture is now widely accepted, as a safe and effective treatment to improve natural fertility and can be used in conjunction with IVF and ICSI.  There is growing evidence showing the benefit of acupuncture to achieve pregnancy and a recent BMJ study showed it increased the chances of pregnancy by 65%.

There has been a huge rise in demand for fertility acupuncture in recent years, as it has had much media attention.

Acupuncture can be used to help regulate the menstrual cycle and correct imbalances.  Fertility improves when both parents are fit and healthy as this optimises the chances of conception.

Five Element Acupuncture is a lesser known style of the therapy which is gentle yet powerful and holisitic in nature. It's supports the person according to their constition. It is also widely used to support women during pregnancy, for a variety of conditions, right up until baby arrives.

Janice finds this area of her work the most exciting and rewarding and loves working with clients to attain their ultimate dream of having a baby.  It is a true priviledge to work with couples to improve their chances of conception, to witness the amazing developments take place, and the reward of seeing a healthy, bouncing baby welcomed to the world.

When I meet new clients for the first time I assess if there are lifestyle factors which are adversely affecting the couples chance of conception.

- AVOID ALCOHOL.  Alcohol reduces fertility as it damages sperm and increases the risk of birth defects.  Furthermore if conception has already taken place, drinking alcohol increases the risk of miscarriage.

- STOP SMOKING. An obvious one but worth mentioning as some women intend quitting once they are pregnant, however smoking reduces your fertility so maximise your chances by stopping now.

- AVOID CAFFEINE. Even an small amount of caffeine a day can signicantly reduce fertility and there is research into it's effects.  Swap your cuppa for the decaffeinated variety or opt for a herbal or fruit tea instead.

- REDUCE STRESS. Some say easier said than done when couples are faced with the rolller coaster of emotion involved when faced with infertility and miscarriage.  No matter how busy, set some time aside each day when you relax in a way that suits you, perhaps being outdoors, getting some gentle exercise or just sitting quietly with your thoughts. Acupncture, yoga, aromatherapy and meditation all help to reduce stress.

- Acupuncture is helpfull in reducing stress. Many also find the benefits of flower remedies very useful in addressing anxiety.

- A wholefood diet is advisable which is high in fresh fruit and vegetables (preferrably organic) which includes wholegrains such as brown rice pulses, oliy fish, oats nuts and seeds.

- Shellfish, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds and nuts are a great source of zinc, while brown rice, wheatgerm, and pulses are a wonderful souce of B vitamins.

- Drinking plenty of water daily keeps you well hydrated, eliminate toxins and helps combat fatigue.

- Avoid sugary drinks, sweets and cakes which can create blood sugar imbalances.
